Italy beat France in Berlin 5-3 on penalties with Fabio Grosso scoring the winning penalty. The game was full of drama as Juventus legend Zinedine Zidane head butted Marco Materazzi in the 100th minute and was sent off on his last game.
The final had a lightning start with Zidane scoring a penalty in the 7th minute but Italy responded quickly and in the 19th minute Marco Materazzi headed in the equaliser. The two players stole the show when in the 100th minute the two players exchanged words then suddenly Zidane head butted the Italian centre back. The final was Zidane's last professional game of which he ended it early with a red card. The end of extra time came with France having only 10 men and the final went to penalties. The penalties looked good until Trezeguet stepped up for France and hit the bar. Italy knew they were ahead and when Fabio Grosso stepped up for Italy's 5th penalty he knew he had to put it in the back of the net. There was tension in the air, he ran towards the ball and BOSH the ball rattled the net, Italy were Campeoni Del Mondo for the fourth time.
Italy the most successful European national team had already won the world cup three times before in 1982, 1938 and 1934. Each time Italy went into the competition underdogs and come out triumphant. This seems almost tradition for Italy as in 2010 Italy went into the competition favourites and well they were no where near the rest of the nations and went out in the group stages.
I still remember the day like yesterday. I was in the pub with my Dad and Nonno. When the penalties were being taken there was complete silence but when we won it was a complete different story. Screaming and shouting, complete strangers hugging and kissing. It was the best day of my LIFE.Comment me your world cup winning moment !!!
